Most people assume estate planning is for rich retirees. It isn’t. If you have a bank account, a car, or a house, you have assets that need a plan.
At ARHQ, we’ve worked with hundreds of families in Ohio, Michigan, and Florida. We keep seeing the same thing: someone passes away or ends up in the hospital, there’s no plan, and suddenly the family is frozen. Bills pile up. Accounts are locked. People argue about things that should never need arguing about.
An estate plan won’t just happen on its own. But getting one doesn’t have to be hard.
Estate laws aren’t national; they’re local. A plan that works in Florida can create problems in Ohio.
Ohio probate court moves slowly and costs money. Michigan has inheritance rules most families never heard of until they needed them. Florida retirees face homestead laws that directly affect who inherits property, and under what terms.
Our team in Maumee, OH knows these differences. We work alongside local attorneys in each state so your plan actually fits where you live, not just what a generic checklist says. Whether you’re in Palm Beach, Ann Arbor, or Toledo, local knowledge matters more than most people realize.
Here are the four mistakes we see most often — and what each one actually costs:
Estate planning is the “E” in ARHQ’s Retirement TEAM Action Plan. Here’s how it actually works:
No billing clock, no lawyer meter running. We’ve had these conversations for over 30 years. We just need to understand your assets, your family, and what you want to happen.
Most people need a will or trust, a healthcare POA, a financial POA, and a living will. Some need more. We help you work out which ones apply to your life.
Simple situations can often be handled through online tools we’ve vetted and used with clients. For anything more complicated, we bring in a trusted local attorney for a real face-to-face meeting.
Life changes and your plan needs to keep up. We recently updated our own family’s estate plan — sat down with our kids, walked them through every document, showed them where things are kept. That conversation matters as much as the paperwork.

There’s a real difference between calling a national 800 number and sitting across the table from someone who knows your county, your state’s laws, and your name.
Our Maumee retirement planning team has worked with families across Ohio, Michigan, and Florida for over 30 years. We’re not attorneys — so you’re never watching a clock tick while we talk. We help you understand your options, then connect you with the right attorney when you need one.
Estate planning Maumee OH, retirement planning Ohio, Ann Arbor financial advisor, Palm Beach estate planning — whatever your situation, we have someone in your corner who knows the local landscape.
Face-to-face still matters. Especially for something this personal.
One family came to us after their father died without a will. The estate sat in probate for 14 months. Legal fees took a serious chunk of it. His grandchildren got almost nothing. His widow now has every document in place — and she knows exactly where they’re kept.
Another couple in their early 60s figured they’d sort the estate stuff out closer to retirement. Then the husband had a sudden medical emergency. His wife couldn’t get into their joint accounts. Their adult kids had no legal standing to step in. It was an awful situation that a signed power of attorney would have prevented.
James Brown died without an estate plan. So did Michael Jackson. We know their stories because they were famous. But this happens every day to regular families — and the conflict, the cost, and the grief are just as real.
Not having an estate plan isn’t just an oversight. It’s a burden you hand off to the people you love, at the worst possible time.
Small steps now can save your family thousands — and spare them from conflict during the hardest moments of their lives. The ARHQ team makes this as straightforward as possible.

Q1: How much money do I need before I need an estate plan?
You don’t need a million dollars. The magic number is 18 — as in, if you’re 18 or older and have any assets at all, you need a plan. A Schwab survey found most people assume the threshold is $1M. It isn’t.
Q2: What documents does an estate plan actually include?
Most plans include a will or trust, a healthcare power of attorney, a financial (durable) power of attorney, and a living will. Each one covers a different gap. Missing even one can leave your family in a difficult spot.
Q3: What happens if I die without a will in Ohio?
Your estate goes through probate court. A judge distributes your assets based on state law — not your wishes. It’s slow, it’s public, and it costs money. A will prevents it.
Q4: Can ARHQ help me create my estate planning documents?
Yes. We walk you through your options and connect you with trusted local attorneys. For simpler situations, we also have online services that work well. Either way, you’re not figuring this out alone.
Q5: Is estate planning only for older adults?
No. A college student with a bank account needs a power of attorney. If they end up in the hospital and their parents have no legal authority to help, it becomes a serious problem fast. We’ve seen it happen.
